A new damselfish, Chromis lubbocki (Teleostei: Pomacentridae) from the Cape Verde Archipelago, with notes on other eastern Atlantic pomacentrids Naturalis
Edwards, A..
A new species of damselfish Chromis lubbocki (Teleostei: Pomacentridae) from the Cape Verde Archipelago is described. The following combination of characters separates C. lubbocki from other eastern Atlantic Chromis: Dorsal fin rays XIV, 12; pectoral fin rays 20 (occasionally 19 or 21); transverse scale rows 27 (rarely 26); scales below lateral-line 9, scales between terminal lateral-line scale and dorsal base 1 1/2; 22-24 gill-rakers on lower limb of first gill-arch; second anal spine longer than longest anal ray; length of second anal spine 18.0-22.2% SL; pelvic fins short, length of longest ray 23.0-29.6% SL; fins yellowish in life. A key to the five species of Chromis now known from the eastern Atlantic is provided and their nomenclature discussed....

A new species of the Marphysa sanguinea complex from French waters (Bay of Biscay, NE Atlantic) (Annelida, Eunicidae) ArchiMer
Lavesque, Nicolas; Daffe, Guillemine; Bonifacio, Paulo; Hutchings, Pat.
A new species of Eunicidae, Marphysa victori sp. n., has been identified from Arcachon Bay, Bay of Biscay, NE Atlantic. This new species, belonging to the sanguinea complex, is characterised by branchiae with long filaments from chaetigers 26–34, the presence of four types of pectinate chaetae with first ones present from chaetiger 2, a large number of both pectinate chaetae and compound spinigers, and the pygidium with only one pair of pygidial cirri. An identification key for European species of the genus Marphysa is provided.

Dynamics of an estuarine nursery ground: the spatio-temporal relationship between the river flow and the food web of the juvenile common sole (Solea solea, L.) as revealed by stable isotopes analysis ArchiMer
Kostecki, Caroline; Le Loc'H, F.; Roussel, J. -m.; Desroy, Nicolas; Huteau, D.; Riera, Pascal; Le Bris, H.; Le Pape, Olivier.
Estuaries are essential fish habitats because they provide nursery grounds for a number of marine species. Previous studies in the Bay of Vilaine (part of the Bay of Biscay, France) have underlined the estuarine dependence of juvenile common sole (Solea solea, L) and shown that the extent of sole nursery grounds was positively influenced by the variability of the river flow. In the present study, stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes were used to describe the trophic network until the young-of-the-year sole and to compare interannual variations in the dominant trophic pathways in the sole nursery areas in this bay. Particulate organic matter (POM), sediment organic matter (SOM), microphytobenthos, benthic invertebrate sole prey and young-of-the-year common...

Further observations on North African and South Iberian Bathyporeia (Crustacea, Amphipoda), with the description of a new species Naturalis
Udekem d’Acoz, C. d'; Echchaoui, H.M.C.; Menioui, M..
A new species of amphipod, Bathyporeia watkini sp. nov. from the Atlantic coasts of North Africa is described. This very characteristic species is abundant in some lagoons and estuaries near 28°N. New morphological information on B. elkaimi d’Udekem d’Acoz and Menioui, 2004 is given after specimens that were recently collected on the Atlantic coasts of southern Spain and South Portugal. The male of B. ledoyeri d’Udekem d’Acoz and Menioui, 2004 is described for the first time and new records of North African B. guilliamsoniana (Bate, 1857) and B. chevreuxi d'Udekem d'Acoz and Vader, 2005a are discussed.

Large Vesicomyidae (Mollusca: Bivalvia) from cold seeps in the Gulf of Guinea off the coasts of Gabon, Congo and northern Angola ArchiMer
Von Cosel, Rudo; Olu, Karine.
Two new genera and three new species of large Vesicomyidae are described from cold-seep sites on pockmarks and other sulfide-rich environments in the Gulf of Guinea (tropical east Atlantic) off Gabon, Congo (Brazzaville) and northern Angola, from 500 to 4000 m depth: "Catyptogena" (s.l.) regab n. sp., Wareniconcha (n.g.) guineensis (Thiele and Jaeckel 1931), Elenaconcha guiness n.g. n. sp., and Isorropodon atalantae n. sp. For two other species already taken by the R/V Valdivia in 1898, Calyptogena valdiviae (Thiele and Jaeckel 1931) and Isorropodon striatum (Thiele and Jaeckel 1931) new localities were discovered, and the species are rediscussed. E. guiness n.g. n.sp. is also recorded from off Banc d'Arguin, Mauritania, collected by commercial fishing...

Fransen, C.H.J.M..
A new species of hippolytid shrimp, Lebbeus africanus spec. nov. is described from the continental slope off Mauritania, eastern Atlantic. A comparison with related species is made. Lebbeus bidentatus Zarenkov, 1976, L. carinatus Zarenkov, 1976, L. curvirostris Zarenkov, 1976, and L. saldanhae Barnard, 1947, are redescribed and their taxonomic status is discussed.

On a collection of blenniid fishes from Mauritania, with a redescription of Spaniblennius riodourensis (Metzelaar, 1919) Naturalis
Bath, H.; Wirtz, P..
During the Tyro Mauritania Expedition (1988) of the Nationaal Natuurhistorisch Museum (formerly Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie) Leiden, six species of Blenniidae were caught at the coast and on the shelf of Mauritania, off the Banc d'Arguin. Additional specimens of Spaniblennius riodourensis (Metzelaar, 1919), previously known only from the holotype, allow to more fully describe the species and the genus Spaniblennius Bath & Wirtz, 1989. New records of Parablennius pilicornis (Cuvier, 1829), Parablennius goreensis (Valenciennes, 1836), Lipophrys velifer (Norman, 1935), Lipophrys pholis (Linnaeus, 1758), and Blennius normani Poll, 1949, present extensions of the known ranges of these species. The coasts of Mauritania appear to represent a region...

Reconstruction of east-west deep water exchange in the low latitude Atlantic Ocean over the past 25,000 years ArchiMer
Howe, Jacob N. W.; Piotrowski, Alexander M.; Hu, Rong; Bory, Aloys.
Radiogenic neodymium isotopes have been used as a water mass mixing proxy to investigate past changes in ocean circulation. Here we present a new depth transect of deglacial neodymium isotope records measured on uncleaned planktic foraminifera from five cores spanning from 3300 to 4900 m on the Mauritanian margin, in the tropical eastern Atlantic as well as an additional record from 4000 m on the Ceara Rise in the equatorial western Atlantic. Despite being located under the Saharan dust plume, the eastern Atlantic records differ from the composition of detrital inputs through time and exhibit similar values to the western Atlantic foraminiferal Nd across the deglaciation. Therefore we interpret the foraminiferal values as recording deep water Nd isotope...
